Hope Healthcare Honor Guard performs recognition ceremony for Madeline Sexton, WWII Navy airplane mechanic

On May 2, an impressive corps representing Hope Healthcare’s Honor Guard performed a memorable and touching recognition ceremony for Madeline Sexton, a resident of The Renaissance at The Terraces of Bonita Springs since 2014, and a veteran of World War II.

Mrs. Sexton served in the U.S. Navy during WWII as an airplane mechanic. She actually painted her tools pink to prevent the other mechanics from borrowing them. While in the Navy, she met her first husband, a naval aviator. He was injured, medically discharged, and was eventually no longer able to live with the family. After the war, Mrs. Sexton settled in New York City where she worked in advertising sales, and she ceased working when she married her second husband Jim who passed away more than a decade ago. Mrs. Sexton has two daughters, five grandchildren, and 15 great grandchildren.

The Hope Healthcare Services Honor Guard was comprised of three veterans, Navy, Marine, and Army, plus one civilian. They presented a special recognition package, including an appreciation certificate, lapel pin, quilt and veteran bear that honors veterans for their service to our country. The certificate was customized specifically for Madeline Sexton. Mrs. Sexton’s caregivers joined her for the ceremony.

Honoring veterans year round

This ceremony serves as a small reminder for us to gather in celebration of those who have served our country, not just on Veterans Day. Please remember to show appreciation to the Veterans in your life all year long. Don’t forget to appreciate the families of service men and women – they have made sacrifices for their loved ones service as well.

At The Terraces, we are proud of our resident veterans and what they have sacrificed on our behalf. We sincerely thank each and every one of them for their service.

Hope Healthcare & Our Community

We are fortunate to have the services of Hope Healthcare in our community. During a presentation at The Terraces last year, we learned more about the organization from Dr. Samira Beckwith, president and CEO of Hope Healthcare Services.

She explained more about Hope Palliative Care, Home Health Care, and an amazing staff who offer kind, compassionate care throughout our community to improve the quality and comfort of life.

Dr. Beckwith said, “Life is a journey starting with birth as a time of joy and celebration. And for every stage of life, we have to figure out the best care possible for the person at that time in his or her life.”

Special events, holiday celebrations, educational programs, guest speakers, and a variety of inspiring activities take place throughout the year at The Terraces at Bonita Springs as part of the community’s active lifestyle programs. The Terraces is the only LifePlan Community for senior living in the Bonita Springs area. Living choices include independent living, assisted living, memory support, skilled nursing and rehabilitation. All levels of care, including assisted living, skilled nursing, and memory support are open for direct admittance, with no entrance fee.
